What's The Best Mountain Bike or Road Bike For A Limited Budget?
I'm looking at buying either a Cannondale, Redline, or Trek mountain bike or road bike but I can't make up my mind. My budget is somewhere around 1000-1200. I like the look of the carbon bikes with suspension but they are quite expensive; I haven't ruled out buying used either. I'm leaning more towards a mtb but will probably be using it more on the road/paved bike trails. Some info on how to buy/purchase a bike or get the most for my money will be much appreciated.
So far, here's what I'm looking at:
Cannondales:

If you are going to ride on pavement most of the time get a road or hybrid bike. You don't need shocks on paved surfaces so a fitness bike will also work. If you want to go fast and for long distances get a Trek 2.1 You can get a full cabon bike from Bikes Direct for about the same price.
Help me choose a Cannondale- Juicy vs. Hope, Lefty vs. Fatty.?
Learned folks,
I have been looking at two used Cannondale Caffeine bikes for over three weeks in order to buy myself a Christmas present. I’d buy either one, but because there are two, I can’t decide and pull the trigger. Both are in good condition with a Caffeine frame. It comes down to Juicy vs. Hope, Lefty vs. Fatty, and 100 bucks. Which would you choose and why?
Here are the specs of first bike/second bike
Frame: Caffeine F1/Caffeine F3
Breaks: Juicy 5/Hope Mini
Shock:Lefty Speed/Fatty
Tires:Hutchinson Pirhana/Mavic Crossfire
Gears:XT/XT
Shifters: XT/LX
The F1 costs 100 bucks more but has the following extras: Pedals, Computer, Air Pump
I've ridden them both- in a parking lot they feel the same (and for the most part, they are). I’m a grown man incapable of making up his mind and I’m ready to ride.
Thanks for any guidance.
Avid kills Hope when it comes to brakes, not even debatable.
The Lefty is a much better fork... again, not even debatable.
XT beats LX... yet again, not even a debatable point.
Also, the F1 is a "higher end" model than the F3 in Cannondales lineup so that's why it's spec'd with better equipment like the Avid Juicy's and the Lefty fork, add in that it also has the computer and the pedals and it's definately worth the extra cash...
Also, to whomever posted that the tires are comparable in quality... Do you even realize that "Mavic Crossfire" refer to the the wheelset? Mavic doesnt make tires.?.? I think they spec'd Maxxis Crossmarks or Ridgelines on the Caffeines as OE...

Hi,
My bottom bracket has been grinding for some time and I suspect it's in dire need of replacement. I've found the specs for my bike: http://www.bikepedia.com/quickbike/BikeSpecs.aspx?Year=1998&Brand=Cannondale&Model=R800&Type=bike
Which state that the bottom bracket is a 68mm version of the Shimano UN52. So, I understand the UN54 is the newest version of this bottom bracket. I've found several different versions: 110mm, 113mm, 118mm, 122mm and 127.5mm. Which version is correct for my bike?
Thanks,
Brant
PS: Outside of a new front hub and stem this bike is stock.
Your 8-sp Shimano 105SC crankset requires a 107mm spindle length. The spindle's taper is JIS. If you "just want to be safe," pull the BB from your frame to see what length spindle is on it before buying the replacement BB. Most places stock 107mm BBs, but they're still not as common as other sizes. If you can't get a 107mm for some reason, you should be fine with a 110mm; the difference is only 1.5mm on the drive side...which is what matters.
If your bike has the original BB in it, it likely is an older style Shimano model with an alloy adjustable cup. Modern UN54 BBs have a plastic cup. These are fine as long as you grease the threads properly and don't overtorque the cup. Otherwise, it can crack upon installation or later removal. Depending on your current BB, you may be able to reuse the alloy cup if you wish. Or you can go with a BB from another mfr (Sugino, IRD, others?) that still use alloy rings.
