Easy to convert twist shifting grips to click/trigger shifting on cannondale bike?
I recently found I bike that I like quite a bit-- the cannondale 400 Comfort-- however, I hate that the shifting is accomplished by twisting the handle grips. The bike shop attendant told me that for an extra 60 bucks they could put on trigger shifters (so basically it would be a button trigger). My question is if this seems reasonable of an enhancement to a bike and if it really will hold and work or if this is like installing after factory parts on a car that never work the same. I don't want this to be the area where I constantly regret purchasing this bike.
no, it should be fine if the guy knows what he is doing- shifter swaps are fairly common especially buying a new bike as the new owner usually wants to make some sort of customizations. .
Depending on the shop and the amount of volume that they do, you may be able to negotiate a cheaper shifter trade out (if they are of comparable $ quality). Some shops will comp you for the time involved for the swap for the overall sale of the bike.

What is the quality of the shifter on my bike?
I have a Cannondale Comfort 5 bike and was wondering about the quality of some of the grip shifter. Its a Shimano SL-RS41 Revo Twist. I haven't been overly impressed by it, but I do like the idea of a grip shift. I'm wondering if most of my problems could be solved by adjusting the deraileurs to make shifting easier. What is considered a high end grip shifter and would fit an 8 speed?
NOTE TO BEN: The difference between Shimano and SRAM is not the spacing between the cogs- it is the amount of cable that the shifters pull. If you use SRAM shifters with Shimano derailleurs (or visa versa) there will be problems.
That being said, GripShift DOES make a Shimano compatible shifter but you must specify it.
Now to the question... I think you just need a good adjustment. You shouldn't need to touch the derailleurs, but removing the slack from the cables would be a good start. Simply shift the bike to 1 on the front and 8 on the back, then use the barrel adjusters on the shifter and/or derailleur to remove cable slack.
