If it works for you then go with it but.....I would definetly get rid of those wheels and that fork sometime down the road they are both JUNK but since all the manufacturers started putting the lower ended stuff on most all their bikes with the advent of the downturn in the economy its no wonder they left you with those components. Upgrade this one to a 9 speed at some point. Brakes up to the BB7 maybe and any 100mm fork should be fine, Rock shox Dart III maybe. Ride what you have before you go throwing hundreds of dollars at a bike that barely cost over $500 as it is. Money would be better spent on a better equipped bike in the longrun!

I found a Cannondale M300 Caad 1 woman's bike online for $200. They said its rarely used and comes with a new set of street tires and a set of knobby tires (please excuse me if my spelling on that was off!)
Anyways I am trying to get back into riding, its been probably 12 years since I was on a bike. I live in the mohave desert where there is a TON of sand. I will be doing a mix of off/on road riding, but nothing too intense mountain bike wise . . . yet.
I was wonder if:
1) this was a good price, the owner didnt say the year, but he did state it looks like new and has pretty much just sat there in his garage.
2) if this would be a good starter bike

I don't know much about this bike but looked it up. It appears to be a unsuspended entry level MTB. If it's in like new condition it's a good starter bike. This is a good step above a Wal Mart bike and @ $200 is a cheap way to get back into cycling. Unsuspended bikes are great for general riding and you can take it on mild MTB trails too.

The Yeti is bombproof, but kinda pricey and you'll have a harder time with frame warranty if you need to deal with that (but you probably won't).
I haven't seen the Santa Cruz up close so I can't comment on it. Everything they do, they do well, so I wouldn't hesitate to buy one of theirs if the components make you happy.
The regular versions of the Chase are great bikes.....a friend of mine has one that he uses mostly for urban flat drops and general concrete abuse. It's impressive....I like riding it when he lets me. The actual Aron Chase copy is different in geometry and components....looks like it should shred pro-like.
I've been on a Jack a couple times and it feels ok, but I don't have great feelings about Trek frames. They stand behind them without hassle, but I've had two Fuels break and have seen a number of them (also Liquids and Sessions) replaced for similar problems. Maybe they've improved their frames in the freeride/dj category but my money would go to another company first until I knew for sure that Trek has fixed stuff. (Trek is a good company and makes a lot of great bikes.....I'm just talking about this category.)
There's nothing like a test ride to sell you on the bike you like best.....ride 'em before you buy one if you have the chance!

i know a chase hard tail uses a -73 x 118mm bb but truvativ howitzer requires a chain line measurement . options are 50 or 56mm. which do i chose? if it helps i am using a 8/9 speed casset body with spacers . so i know i can adjust it plenty . i just want the proper line for when i got to a true single speed rear hub . thanks in advance
edit: in the future i will be upgrading to a true single speed rear hub . so i don't want to just space the rear hub appropriately . i want a true chain line from day one
A single speed chain line is less work, and really good ones are only 20 US.
i am 5'10" and i have 58cm cannondale 400r bicycle how tall or how heigh the seat post should be from the ground to the top of my seat? not sure of what my inseam is. i am going on a 142mile ride in oct so i need to reall comfortable.
best and easiest thing to do: get thee to your local bike shop and get fitted
