Does anybody have a Cannondale mountian bike with a Lefty fork? How do you like it?
I'm thinking about "forking" out some money in the near future to upgrade to a better mountain bike. I've been eyeing the Cannondales that have the Lefty forks, and I'm wondering what the advantages/drawbacks are. Also, are the special hubs quick release? Thanks!
Leftys are sweet. Very light weight for the amount of travel, and excellent torsional stiffness. Also very durable and rebuildable. Replacement parts readily available, whereas most fork manufacturers (Rock Shox, Manitou, etc.) only stock replacement parts for three years. People always think Leftys look fragile, but I've seen a few terrible head-on crashes involving Leftys, including one that broke a frame, with no damage to the fork or hub mechanism. You don't have to take the wheel off to change a tire. Headshok headset bearings and Lefty fork bearings hold up better than almost any high end traditional headsets/hubs.
Drawbacks: Wheel removal involves a 5mm allen wrench and messing with several bolts (hub and disc brake). For this reason you may want to get a car rack that doesn't require removal of the front wheel. For fork mount racks there are Lefty adapters, but you still have to go through the unbolting process. Leftys are disc brake only. Of course, your frame has to be a Cannondale, or one of the few other companies that have licensed the oversized Headshok headtube. You can get various adapters to put a traditional fork on a Headshok frame. Project 321 makes adapters to put Leftys on non-Cannondale frames, but there are limitations.
Overall an awesome fork, and the Cannondale frames are nice too.
